Well crafted copy that engages and builds brand trust is an important part of any successful website. Writing website content can be overwhelming task, but with some planning and strategy at the start, the process can be much more manageable.

Start With Your Why

  • Establish your goals
First, it is essential to develop a strategy and goals around your website: Know why you are building a website and who it is for. What are the goals of your website, and what outcomes do you hope to achieve? Whether it’s to sell products, educate, or grow a community, setting clear goals will help keep you focused.
  • Understand your audience
Identify your target audience and establish your ideal customer. What challenges do they face, and what problems do they need solving? Understanding your audience before you begin the writing process will help you build content that will appeal your target audience.
  • Establish your Unique Value Proposition (USP)
  • A USP is what your business offers that is unique from its competitors. An effective USP communicates your brand’s values and differentiates what your company offers through what you stand for and how this benefits your customers.
  • Establish your tone of voice
Your tone of voice conveys your company’s values, personality and attitude. Are you friendly and approachable? Professional and educational? Fun and innovative? Establish a tone of voice when writing your content that aligns with what your brand stands for.

Next, get to work writing your content

  • Writing your content
Once you have established your goals, target market, USP and tone of voice, get started writing your website copy. Choose a time when you can block out at least one full day to work on your content, with no other interruptions.
  • Keep it compact
Aim to keep your copy compact. Use simple, direct language to ensure your message is clear. Break up text with subheadings or bullet points to keep your content into smaller, scannable sections. This allows your audience to quickly scan your copy and understand the key takeaways.
  • Incorporate Calls To Action (CTA)
A CTA is a prompt designed to inspire your target audience of a marketing campaign to take a specific action for example signing up for a newsletter, downloading a free PDF, or buying a product. A CTA can appear as a clickable button or as hyperlinked text, and is often seen directly on the page, in pop-up form, or in a button or banner. When potential customers click on it, they’re one step closer to conversion.
  • Optimise your words for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
Establish the keywords that people will use to find you, and incorporate them into your copy to improve search engine visibility.
